The North
East India comprises of the seven sister states of Arunachal
Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.
They form part of the East Himalayan region, which extends from
Sikkim eastwards and embraces the Darjeeling Hills of West Bengal.
The location of the region is strategically important as it has
international borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Myanmar and
Tibet. The area is characterized by rich bio-diversity, heavy
precipitation and high seism city. It is endowed with forest wealth
and is ideally suited to produce a whole range of plantation crops,
spices, fruits and vegetables and flowers and herbs. The rich
natural beauty, serenity and exotic flora and fauna of the area are
invaluable resources for the development of eco-tourism. Total area
of the region is about 2,55,168 Sq. Km. All the seven states are
members of the North East Council, organized on 1st August 1972 and
within the Jurisdiction of Guwahati High Court.

Assam is a state of breath-taking scenic beauty, rarest flora and
fauna, vast rolling plain, mighty waterways and a land of fairs and
festival. Located in the northeastern part of the country and has an
area of 30,285 square miles (78,438 square kilometres). It is
bounded to the north by the kingdom of Bhutan and the state of
Arunachal Pradesh; to the east by the states of Nagaland and
Manipur; to the south by the states of Mizoram and Tripura; and to
the west by the state of Meghalaya, Bangladesh, and the state of
West Bengal. Guwahati is the gateway to the Northeastern states of
India. The Brahmaputra River valley is the dominant physical feature
of Assam. The river enters Assam near Sadiya in the extreme
northeast and runs westward across the length of Assam for nearly
450 miles before turning south to enter the plains of Bangladesh.

Arunachal is vast – its terrain difficult. But vacationing in
Arunachal Pradesh is an adventure. It is inhabited by 26 major
tribes and a number of sub tribes. This state attained its statehood
on 20th February 1987. It is situated in the Northeastern part of
India with 83743 sq. kms area and has a long international border
with Bhutan to the west (160 km), China to the north and north-east
(1,080 km) and Myanmar to the east (440 km). It stretches from
snow-capped mountains in the north to the plains of Brahmaputra
valley in the south. Arunachal is the largest state area-wise in the
northeast region, even larger than Assam, which is the most
populous.

One of the North Eastern states of India, Meghalaya is a sylvan
beauty of breathtaking beauty. Meghalaya literally means "Abode (alaya)
of the Clouds (megha)". The name describes the climatic phenomenon
that brings torrents of rain in this region. Meghalaya is a region
of great scenic beauty: a panorama of lush, undulating hills,
fertile valleys, waterfalls, sparkling mountain streams and lakes.
It was declared the 21st State of India on 21st January 1972. it
united the areas of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills. With an
approximate area of 22, 429 square kilometers Meghalaya is bounded
by Assam in the North and the East, and the plains of Bangladesh in
the South and West. The capital is the hill town of Shillong. The
State is divided into three hilly regions---the Garo Hills (Western
Meghalaya), the Khasi Hills (Central Meghalaya), and the Jaintia
Hills (Eastern Meghalaya).

Manipur is situated in the northeastern region of the country. As
one might say without hesitation, the land is a paradise come true
on earth. Literally meaning “ the jeweled land”, Manipur is richly
endowed with natural beauty and splendor. Home to Sangai, a rare
species of deer and Siroy Lily, the only terrestrial lily grown on
the hill tops of Siroi hill, St. Clair Grimwood described it as " A
Pretty Place more beautiful than many show places of the world."
Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru paid a fitting tribute by describing it
as "Jewel of India".
Manipur is bounded by Nagaland in the north, Mizoram in the south,
Upper Myanmar in the east and Cachar District of Assam in the west.
Manipur is comprised of nine districts: Bishnupur, Chandel,
Churachandpur, Imphal East, Imphal West, Senapati, Tamenglong,
Thoubal and Ukhrul. The altitude of capital city Imphal is 970 mtrs.

The State of Nagaland, covering an area of 16,527 sq kms is
encircled by Assam in the North and West, Burma and Arunachal
Pradesh in the East and Manipur in the South. The Naga Hills run
through this small state, which has Saramati as its highest peak at
a height of 12,600 ft. The main rivers that flow through Nagaland
are Dhansiri, Doyang, Dikhu and Jhanji. The terrain is mountainous,
thickly wooded, and cut by deep river valleys. There is a wide
variety of plant and animal life. Nagaland has a monsoon climate
with generally high humidity; rainfall averages between 1800 and
2500 mm (70 and 100 in) a year. It is situated between latitude 25 r
6 and 27 r 4 ' N and latitude, North of equator and between the
longitudinal lines 93 r 20' E and 95 r 15' E.
The State was carved out of the territories that were earlier known
as Naga Hills---Tuesnsang Area (NHTA), through the State of Nagaland
Act, 1962. it was inaugurated on 1st December, 1963, by the then
President of India , Dr S. Radhakrishnan.

Tripura formerly known as Hill Tippera. The princely state of
Tripura acceded to the Indian Union in 1949. The Ancient land of
Tripura is bounded on the North, West, South and Southeast by the
international boundary of Bangladesh. In the East it has a common
boundary with Assam and Mizoram. This tiny state has an area of
about 10,500 sq.kms and is India's third smallest state, after Goa
and Sikkim.
Tripura is mainly a hilly territory with altitudes varying from 50
to 3080 ft above sea level, though the major population of the state
lives in the plains. Tripuri people from the biggest tribe
comprising 60% of the total tribal population.

Mizoram is the southern most tip of the hill states, protruding
downwards between Burma and Bangladesh. Towards its north we have
Manipur, Assam and Tripura, and in the Western most part are the
Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, and finally Myanmar (formerly
known as Burma) in the East. Mizoram means, “Land of the
Highlanders” in the local language, Mizo. The Mizo Hills, which
dominate the state's topography, rise to more than 2000 m (6560 ft)
near the Myanmar border.
The hilly terrain has given the land of Mizoram its pleasant
personality. This land of Mizoram has visually unique sights. The
Mizo’s love for flowers has them growing beautiful orchids and
geraniums in their gardens and surroundings. Taking note of the
population, the Christians make up a solid 84 per cent of the Mizo
population while 7 per cent are Hindu’s and about 1 per cent of the
population is Muslim.
